This 135,000 SF building is a new hub for University of Illinois Chicago’s rapidly growing Computer Science department—designed to support next-generation teaching, research, and collaboration. At its heart is a five-story, light-filled atrium that connects classrooms, faculty offices, state-of-the-art research labs, and flexible gathering spaces. The facility includes 16,000 SF of classroom space, 21 research labs, and a 1,200 SF robotics lab—all built to foster innovation at every level.
Constructed with more than 1,200 tons of structural steel and nearly 31,000 SF of architectural precast concrete with terra cotta accents, the building blends seamlessly into the natural setting near the Harry W. Peace Memorial Grove. Its modern exterior features over 29,000 SF of curtainwall, glazed windows, and skylights.
Sustainability was a key priority throughout. The CDRLC includes a geo-thermal farm beneath the grove that will support energy-efficient heating and cooling, and photovoltaic arrays integrated into the roof and terrace levels. The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
