W.E. O’Neil entered the Baton Rouge market in 2023 with the successful construction of The Queen Baton Rouge. Building on that achievement and the strong relationships forged, we were selected to deliver the landside relocation of Bally’s Baton Rouge—a 232,000 SF renovation and adaptive reuse project featuring:
Converting the landmark atrium into a casino presented unique challenges due to varied existing conditions. Sections included a partial basement, depressed floors requiring raised platforms with rough-ins, and on-grade slabs that demanded saw-cutting of 18” thick slabs for gaming equipment installation.
One of the most complex elements was installing a mezzanine within the atrium to house mechanical systems and utilities above the gaming floor that also supports the ceiling structure for the gaming area. Retractable shutters were integrated into the ceiling design, allowing visitors to enjoy views of the evening sky and the atrium’s architecture.
Construction was further complicated by the site’s proximity to the Mississippi River, requiring compliance with Army Corps of Engineers regulations, restrictions on pile drilling, and coordination with city utilities and traffic reconfiguration. The project site encompasses ten unique structures, some dating back to the 1800s. Our team took great care to honor and preserve the rich history that holds deep significance for the local community, bringing a one-of-a-kind facility back to life.
Early work included the rapid build-out of a temporary casino to immediately bring gaming landside, meeting code and gaming board requirements within an eight-week timeline.
