In support of our repeat-client’s vision to transform Hawthorn Mall into an around-the-clock, vibrant mixed-use destination, W.E. O’Neil led a comprehensive, multiphase infrastructure overhaul of the 20-acre site. Spanning four years, the project encompassed master planning, conceptual estimating, and extensive stakeholder coordination to reimagine both the mall site and its surrounding infrastructure.
The project included demolition of the former Sears and Carson Pirie Scott department store buildings, executed with careful attention to maintaining uninterrupted interior and exterior mall operations, as well as controlling dust and noise levels. A major reconfiguration of the mall’s infrastructure was undertaken, including the relocation of one mile of inner and outer Ring Roads along with associated sidewalks, site lighting, and landscaping.
Additionally, five new road intersections were created, enhancing access points to the mall. Extensive utility work was performed, including ComEd and communication fiber ductbanks and gas main relocation. Wet utility upgrades included stormwater and sanitary piping as well as water and fire main relocations.
The project also established five new outparcel sites, each equipped with utility infrastructure, grading, curbs, parking lots, and landscaping. To support site stability and aesthetics, earth retention systems and decorative stainless-steel handrails were installed throughout the parkland areas.
