Canstruction: Stepping Up to Fight Hunger in Chicago

W.E. O’Neil Construction and OKW Architects teamed up once again for Canstruction Chicago – an annual competition benefiting the Greater Chicago Food Depository at the Chicago Merchandise Mart. Our team spent months planning, designing, collecting donations and purchasing more than 6,000 cans of food for our structure.

This year, we “Stepped Up To Fight Hunger”, building a larger-than-life food pyramid. Just like the traditional food pyramid, each color on our structure represents a different food group and contains cans filled with that category of food. The stairs represent physical activity, something that, in combination with food and nutrition, can contribute to a Chicagoan taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Together, the cans in our structure can be combined to create a healthy, well-balanced meal for someone in need.
