At W.E O’Neil, we believe that our people are our competitive edge. The success of our work is enhanced by the quality of our team, and that includes our interns. By providing them with the opportunity to work on-site, our interns are able to use what they’ve learned in class and get a hands-on experience in the field. With proper training and mentorship, we are able to develop our interns both personally and professionally, and eventually into full-time members of our family. Currently, 15% of our California office started as interns and has earned roles including Project Engineer, Project Superintendent, Estimators and Project Manager.

By working with our operations personnel, our interns are able to learn about the industry from professionals. They apply what they have learned in the classroom and on the field to real life jobsite situations. Their responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following: reviewing and submitting Requests for Information (RFI), documenting daily progress, facilitating safety orientations, and collaborating with owners and subcontractors. The interns gain valuable experience while making significant contributions to the completion of our projects.

Our interns also attend training events and certification courses, such as OSHA 30 Hour and Qualified SWPPP Practitioner Training. The Project Engineer Roundtable in particular allows the interns to work with our Project Engineers, Project Managers, and other operations personnel on various case studies and team-building exercises.

Aside from on-site work and training, we also provide interns with the chance to network and build connections within the company. This summer, our interns attended team building events, celebrated project milestones and participated in the first annual California Intern Road Trip.

During the California Intern Road Trip, our interns took a tour of several Southern California projects. They were able to visit completed projects such as the West Hollywood Library, as well as two of our current projects, Caruso’s Masonic Temple Renovation in Glendale, California and Equity Residential’s Howard Hughes Apartments in Los Angeles, California.

Another summer has commenced and most of our interns have returned to school. We hope that the knowledge and experience that we have shared with them will be a good foundation for their careers both in and out of school. We wish our interns the best of luck with the upcoming school year and would like to thank them all for their efforts this summer.
