The showroom was the first Gold rating from the USGBC LEED-CI program for a space in the Merchandise Mart.

Gary Comer Youth Center Chicago, IL

Rooftop Garden

The striking rooftop garden replaces heat generating asphalt with heat reducing plants while the skylights provide natural lighting for the gym and cafeteria below. The garden also serves as a space where the youth center participants can grow and harvest vegetables and flowers.

Green materials include low-VOC paint and carpet, recycled rubber flooring, and recycled wood ceiling panels, and office and classroom lighting controlled with occupancy sensors. The exterior fiber cement panels have recycled content and no waste water was produced in their manufacturing. In addition, the panels can be replaced individually in case of vandalism.
